NEPAL: Major Chinese Investment for a Solar Nepal

A Press Releasefrom the Right Livelihood Award Foundation forwarded by the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC)

In a game-changing announcement to a packed house on Day 2 of the ‘MAKE NEPAL GREEN’ seminar, Chinese Billionaire entrepreneur and Laureate of the prestigious Right Livelihood Award, Huang Ming, disclosed special solar projects planned for Nepal.

Responding to a question put to him by Mr. Jalan Kumar Sharma, CEO of Nepal’s Sana KisanVikas Bank, Mr. Huang Ming, founder of Himin Solar Energy Group, said that a formal announcement would wait until the Prime Minister of Nepal’s visit to China next month.

Mr. Ming, who had the audience riveted with his exhibition of various innovative solar products, hinted that the different projects planned would serve the needs of the rural poor and social entrepreneurs.

The two-day meeting on ‘MAKE NEPAL GREEN’ in Kathmandu has witnessed synergy and broad consensus between politicians, officials, bankers, farmers, civil society, and Laureates of the Right Livelihood Award, also known as the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize.’

Yesterday, the Minister of Agricultural Development, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) offered support to ‘MAKE NEPAL GREEN’; NRB Director Mr. Gopal Prasad Bhatta, asked the organisers to provide a full-fledged roadmap that the Bank would study in order to make a development recommendation in the pre-Budget Report.

The meeting ended with the drafting of the Kathmandu Declaration, which formulates a vision to “promote and upscale sustainable agriculture, harness renewable energy, foster eco-tourism, and develop information communication technology”.

“This draft Declaration will be circulated widely to build broad consensus across Nepal to ‘MAKE NEPAL GREEN’ a success” said Nepal’s Right Livelihood Award Laureate ShrikrishnaUpadhyay.

Founded in 1980, the Right Livelihood Awards are presented annually in the Swedish Parliament and are often referred to as ‘Alternative Nobel Prizes’. They were introduced to “honour and support those offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges facing us today”. There are now 162 Right Livelihood Award Recipients from 67 countries.
