PAKISTAN: Army Death Squads Conspire to eliminate Baloch intelligentsia

Toronto, July 14, 2010 – Baloch Human Rights Council (Canada) has expressed serious concern over the recent targeted killings of Baloch political leaders in Kech Makuran and Quetta. In an urgently issued press release, BHRC condemned in strongest words the extra judicial assassinations of Mr. Maula Bakhsh Dashti and Mr. Habib Jalib in Balochistan. Mr. Dashti was gunned down on July 11, 2010 by unknown assailants in Kech Makuran. He was a central committee member of National Party, former chairman of Baloch Students Organization (BSO-Awami), and district Nazim Turbat during the Musharraf era.

Mr. Jalib was shot and killed on July 14, 2010 in broad daylight when he was on his way to the court. His assassins claimed to be members of Baloch Armed Defense, an anti-Baloch hit-squad of the Pakistani intelligence agencies that have also previously claimed responsibility of killing three student members of BSO in Khuzdar. Mr. Jalib, former senator was a senior lawyer of Pakistan Supreme Court and chairman of BSO in the Zia-ul-Haq era. He was the Secretary General of Balochistan National Party – Mengal.

With the inclusion of Mr. Ghulam Mohammad Baloch’s cold-blooded, execution-style murder in April 2009, the total count of assassinations of former BSO chairmen by ISI comes to three in a short period of 16 months, all under a so-called democratically elected government.

BHRC strongly believes that the ongoing military operation in Balochistan has reached a critical juncture where political assassination of high-profile Baloch leaders at the hands of Pakistan Army death squads has become the norm and will grow.

BHRC observed that while in the Musharraf era, focus of military was to eliminate patriots from the Baloch tribal elite such as Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti and Mir Balaach Marri; the current strategy of the army has shifted to the destruction of the middle strata leadership to weaken the grassroots connections and Baloch intelligentsia.

Dr. Zaffar Baloch
President, BHRC (Canada)
