CHINA: Hu Jia formally charged for “inciting subversion”
Reporters Without Borders said today it was outraged by the charge of “inciting subversion of state power” made against dissident Hu Jia, who has been held secretly in Beijing for more than a month.
His family was notified in writing yesterday by the prosecutor’s office that Hu Jia, who is suffering from liver disease, was to be put on trial. He risks a harsh prison sentence.
“Are the authorities in Beijing so deaf that they have not heard the appeals for clemency for Hu Jia, from China and the rest of the world?” the worldwide press freedom organisation asked.
“This charge is an insult to the diplomatic efforts of many countries who have expressed their views following the arrest of this free expression activist, six months ahead of the Olympic Games,” it added.
A spokesperson for Chinese Human Rights Defenders confirmed to Reporters Without Borders that Hu Jia’s family had been told about the charge on 30 January, just two days before the end of the legal time limit for being held in custody.
Hu Jia is still held secretly in Beijing. His lawyers have not been allowed to visit him and have been followed by the political police wherever they go.
Hu’s wife, Zeng Jinyan, and their two-month-old daughter are still under house arrest in the capital – making the baby girl effectively the world’s youngest political prisoner.
First the European Parliament, but also the United States and the European Commission have all appealed to the Chinese authorities on behalf of Hu Jia.

CHINE: Hu Jia formelement inculpé d'”incitation à la subversion”
Reporters sans frontières est scandalisée par l’inculpation d'”incitation à la subversion du pouvoir de l’Etat” du dissident Hu Jia, détenu au secret depuis plus d’un mois à Pékin. Sa famille a reçu le 30 janvier 2008 un document émanant du Bureau du procureur l’informant qu’une procédure allait être engagée pour le juger. Il risque une lourde peine de prison.
“Les autorités de Pékin sont-elles aussi sourdes qu’elles n’ont pas entendu les appels à la clémence en faveur de Hu Jia, venant de Chine et du reste du monde ? Cette inculpation une insulte aux efforts diplomatiques de nombreux pays qui ont exprimé leur émotion après l’arrestation de ce militant de la liberté d’expression, à six mois des Jeux olympiques”, a affirmé Reporters sans frontières.
Un responsable de l’organisation Chinese Human Rights Defenders a confirmé à Reporters sans frontières que le 30 janvier la famille de Hu Jia avait été informée qu’il était inculpé d'”incitation à la subversion du pouvoir de l’Etat”, deux jours seulement avant la fin du délai légal de détention provisoire.
Hu Jia est toujours détenu au secret à Pékin. Ses avocats n’ont pas été autorisés à lui rendre visite. Ils sont au contraire surveillés par la police politique dans leurs déplacements. Hu Jia est malade du foie.
L’épouse de Hu Jia, Zeng Jinyan, et leur fille de deux mois sont toujours assignées à résidence à Pékin. Leur fille est de fait la plus jeune prisonnière politique du monde.
Le Parlement européen d’abord, mais également les Etats-Unis et la Commission européenne sont intervenus auprès des autorités chinoises en faveur de Hu Jia.
