The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) wishes to announce the launch of its weekly video news bulletin, the Human Rights Asia – Weekly Roundup.
The seventh episode, released today, 27 November 2013, features a special focus on police torture for the purpose of extortion. Several examples from countries in Asia, such as the Philippines and Bangladesh, will highlight how police not only use torture to force confessions but also to extract money and gain promotions.
Human Rights Asia Weekly Roundup marks the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with an Asia report.
Sri Lanka’s government escalates its continuing venomous attacks on human rights defenders, with state media smear campaigns. Its latest attack against human rights defender and trade unionist lawyer Nilmalka Fernando accuses her as a traitor to her country.
Also in this episode, Nepal concludes successful elections. And a leaked video from Pakistan provides evidence that Pakistani student leader Afzal Panhwar was indeed killed in a fake encounter set up by the Sindh police, and not in a legitimate encounter, as claimed by the authorities.
Finally, as the Philippines marks the fourth anniversary of the Maguindanao massacre, where 58 people, including 32 journalists, were slaughtered, widow Myrna Reblando reads a poem dedicated to her husband and the other victims.
