This is Just Asia’s final episode for 2015. It begins with a report from Sri Lanka and the long struggle for justice of a torture survivor. Rohitha Liyanage was after 10 years finally able to see the perpetrators tried and convicted for their crime. Two police officers tortured Rohitha so brutally that his leg was broken in several places. The police officers have now been sentenced to 7 years in prison for their crime.
Next, Just Asia reports on persistent caste discrimination in Nepal particularly against Dalits. Human rights defender Shiva Hari Gyawali speaks about the last caste taboo, which is inter-caste marriage.
AHRC recently held 2 workshops in Indonesia to discuss effective strategies for the future of human rights work. One participant, Mr Muhdi, a survivor of the notorious Talangsari massacre in 1989, speaks with Just Asia about his struggle since the atrocity.
Finally, Basil Fernando, AHRC’s Director for Policy and Programmes, delivers his New Year message about human rights in Asia. What are his observations at the end of 2015 and what are his hopes for 2016? Watch this episode of Just Asia to find out.
