Today the AHRC releases the 27th Episode of the Human Rights Asia Weekly Roundup.
In this week’s programmewe report on the spate of killings, torture, and vandalism that has erupted in western Assam, India, in the last few days. Thirty-two have lost their lives so far.
We also interview Pakistani human rights defender BushraKhaliq about slavery in Pakistan and some of its causes.
We track Dalit villagers from Haryana who are in Delhi protesting against the gang rape of four Dalit girls, a form of punishment meted by upper caste Jats of the village.
T.K. Naveenachandran, a human rights defender from Kerala, India, talks about the links between police torture and corruption and how corruption will not be eradicated without police reform.
We also track abductions and disappearances in Bangladesh, a daily occurrence. On April 27, Rapid Action Battalion personnel allegedly abducted seven people, almost simultaneously. Their bodies have been recovered from the Sitalakkha River, weighed down with bricks.
In Voices of Survivors, this week we talk to Florence Macagne-Manegdeg, widow of the Philippines human rights activist Jose “Pepe” Manegdeg.
