ASIA: Weekly Roundup, Episode 37

Today we are releasing the 37th episode of Human Rights Asia Weekly Roundup.

This week we are drawing attention to how various governments are restricting the work of NGOs. Through legislation and other means numerous governments are trying to reduce critical opinion, hampering human rights work across Asia.

In Sri Lanka, NGOs are being advised not to interact with the press and the government is claiming that this is based on pre-existing laws.

India intends to impugn the image of numerous NGOs based on the reputation of a few bad actors. We interview Mr. Sachin Jain, a human rights advocate with broad experience for his views on the subject.

In Bangladesh, the government is attempting to exert control over NGOs finances by putting groups with foreign funding under strict surveillance. AHRC Bangladesh expert Mr. MD Ashrafuzzaman tells us more about the situation in an interview.

Nepal has also restricted funding for NGOs by, among other things, banning the practice of earmarking international donation for NGO work. For more on the subject, we interview Supreme Court advocate Mr. Dipendra Jha.

The bulletin can be watched online at AHRC YouTube. We welcome both human rights feeds to be considered for weekly news bulletin and your suggestions to improve our news channel. Please write to news@ahrc.asia. You can also watch our Weekly Roundup on Facebook.
