ASIAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION - URGENT APPEALS PROGRAMME

Urgent Appeal Case: UP-25-2004
ISSUES: Arbitrary arrest & detention,

Dear friends,

The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) is happy to inform you that the two arrested human rights defenders Dinesh Prasain and Usha titikchu were released unconditionally from the Anamnagar City Police Office, Kathmandu at around 2:30pm on 5 June 2004. In the morning of 4 June 2004, Dinesh Prasain, a coordinator of Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP) and Usha titikchu, a photojournalist were illegally arrested by the police from the Anamnagar City Police Office at the COCAP office in Anamnager. At the time of arrest the police did not have arrest warrants nor did they have any orders to arrest Dinesh and Usha. AHRC had issued urgent appeal regarding this case on 5 June 2004. (To see our previous urgent appeal, please visit: http://www.ahrchk.net/ua/mainfile.php/2004/691/)

According to Dinesh, he and Usha had been well treated while they were detained in the City Police Office. It is reported that Dinesh and Usha are in good condition now. But COCAP and other NGO groups, which are currently fighting for the human rights violation and democracy strongly in Nepal, worry that their activists might be subjected to illegal arrest and detention again in the future.

Thank you for your strong support regarding this matter.
