In this week’s episode, Just Asia covers the commemoration of the 1989 Talangsari Massacre in Indonesia. Although the Talangsari Massacre was mentioned by President Widodo as one of his government’s priorities, until now no concrete solution has been provided.
Next, Just Asia looks at the unrest at India’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The unrest began after a group of students commemorated the death anniversary of Afzal Guru, and called his hanging a judicial murder. To learn more, AHRC TV interviewed former JNU student Avinash Pandey.
Moving to Nepal, Just Asia caught up with Sabitri Shrestha, who has been fighting for justice for her brother for the past 17 years. Ujjan Kumar Shrestha was murdered by Maoist leader Balkrishna Dhungel in 1998.
From Pakistan, Just Asia reports that nine activists were recovered after 22 days of disappearance.
Finally, Just Asia introduces a new feature: a brief report on weekly human rights violations across Asia. The AHRC’s Urgent Appeals system was created to give voice and support to those affected by rights violations. This week’s Urgent Appeals include a police officer murdered in India for doing his job, the lack of outcome in the police investigation in the Tolikara violence, Papua, and a human rights defender summoned for questioning by the Indonesian police regarding his statement on a TV talk show.
The bulletin can be watched online at AHRC TV YouTube. We welcome both human rights feeds to be considered for weekly news bulletin, and your suggestions to improve our news channel. Please write to news@ahrc.asia. You can also watch our Weekly Roundup on Facebook.
