The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) is happy to announce the launch of its weekly video news bulletin, the Human Rights Asia TV – Weekly Roundup.
Today, 3 December 2013, we release the 8th Episode where we continue with our special feature from last week on how police use torture as a means for extortion with more accounts from Bangladesh and India.
With last Friday, 29 November, being declared Women Human Rights Defender Day, we highlight the dangers of being a woman human rights defender and the difficulties faced by many women in Asia.
We bring you the story of the famous Tamil poet VIS Jayapalan, who was arrested by the Police on 22 November while visiting his birthplace in Jaffna. It showcases the harassment Sri Lankans living abroad have to face on their return to the country.
We also continue to bring coverage of the Long March from Quetta to Karachi that protests disappearances in Pakistan. The participants have now reached Karachi after their treacherous, over 700 km long, march.
We also bring you a special report marking the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery on 2 December, according to which, an estimated 29.8 million people are trapped in ‘modern slavery’. Pakistan has been ranked 3rd, Nepal 4th, and India 5th in the Global Slavery Index.
