Today the AHRC releases the 26th Episode of the Human Rights Asia Weekly Roundup.
We begin this week’s programme with breaking news concerning AdilurRahman Khan, renowned Bangladesh activist, who also happens to be Secretary, Odhikar, an AHRC partner organization. For his courage and uncompromising stance against forces of impunity in his country, Adilur has been selected for the 2014 Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders as well as the 2014 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights.
What follows is a special focus on dance of democracy in India, i.e. the general elections currently underway. The massive logistical exercise has irregularity, anomaly, and discrimination as some of its features. We speak with citizens in the world’s largest democracy unable to cast their votes.
We track the story of Indonesian domestic helper ErwianaSulistyaningsih, who has returned to Hong Kong for medical examinations to support her case against a former employer who allegedly tortured her.
In other news, India has joined repressive regimes of the Like Minded Group (LMG) of nations in attacks against civil society groups at a parallel event during the 25th Human Rights Council Session.
Disappeared miners forced to guide a military crackdown have been found in a shallow grave in northern Philippines.
And, dozens of prisoners have suffered suspected food poisoning in Bangladesh; dismal state of health care institutions are exposed.
