In this week’s Roundup, AHRC TV reports on the latest turns in the on-going Rohingya refugee crisis in Southeast Asia and the discovery of dozens of mass graves in jungle areas along the Thai-Malaysian border. AHRC TV speaks with international human trafficking expert Matt Friedman, and Glorene Dass of Malaysian organisation Tenaganita.
Next in the programme is an update about the aftermath of the earthquake in Nepal. Remote areas have yet to receive aid and protection more than a month after the quake.
The programme then moves on to northeast India, where a Manipur police sub-inspector has been severely assaulted by the 25-man-strong security detail of a VIP politician; the conscientious policeman earlier exposed a high-level drug-smuggling operation in Manipur.
Finally, AHRC TV reports on the gang rape and murder of a young schoolgirl in Jaffna in north Sri Lanka. Public protest has led the President to promise swift justice. This contrasts sharply with other rape cases that drag on through the court systems for years or even decades. AHRC TV speaks with Rita, who was raped as a teen 14 years ago. Despite identifying her attackers the very same day she was raped, the case has yet to conclude. AHRC TV also speaks with AHRC’s Director of Policy and Programmes, Basil Fernando, about the Sri Lankan judicial system that leads to such extreme delays.
