Today, AHRC TV releases the 32nd episode of the Human Rights Asia Weekly Roundup.
In this week’s programme, we begin by tracking the brutal crackdown by police on a village in Nepal’s Dolpa District. Buffer Zone Management Committee and the Dolpo community disagree on the management of a natural resource. But, rather than dialogue, the state has responded by unleashing violent policemen, who have killed and injured members of the local community.
Next, AHRC TV turns to India, where the Intelligence Bureau has leaked a document to media groups, which blames civil society organisations for slowing down economic development. Is a crackdown on civil society activism in India imminent?
The AHRC has published a book about Sri Lanka’s history of disappearances. AHRC TV speaks with the author Jane Thompson-Senanayake, who has interviewed family members of the disappeared and analysed reasons behind this lawless phenomenon in her study.
Lastly, we turn our attention to domestic workers in Pakistan, who are employed in virtually all well-off Pakistani homes. These workers are often children; they are highly vulnerable to abuse. Bushra Khaliq speaks to AHRC TV about the lack of legal protection and the social acceptance of abuse of domestic help.
