Public Seminar: “10th year of Martial Law and the insurgency:Democracy, human rights & conflict transformation in the Deep South”
Wednesday 27 February 2013 (9.00-16.30)
NERO Room, 3rd Floor, Bangkok Chada Hotel,
Concept Note
The continuing unrest in the Deep South of Thailand has now entered its 10th year and a pacification of the situation is not expected any time soon. Achieving peace, security, stability and justice in the Deep South presents a challenge to all involved stakeholders. At present, it is widely acknowledged that the violence in the Deep South has entered into a protracted state or conflict transformation.
On the occasion of 10th year of the escalation of the insurgency in 2004, this event aims at reflecting on the changes and continuities in the patterns of violence and human rights abuses since the onset of the conflict. In specific, on this upcoming Thursday an overview of both the dynamics of insurgency violence in 2009 as well as human rights abuses committed by the security forces under the special laws during the last year will be presented. Panelists include representatives from Law Reform Committee of Thailand, Cross Cultural Foundation (CrCF), Muslim Attorney Center Foundation (MAC), Duayjai (Children Voices for Peace), Deep Peace, HAP, Deep South Watch (DSW) The Asia Foundation (TAF), Human Rights Watch, FIDH and International commission of Jurists (ICJ). This event will help us to reflect on the past as well as to anticipate and prepare for what might lie in store for the conflict in the Deep South in 2013.
