A Statement from NGO Federation of Nepal, forwarded by the Asian Human Rights Commission
Nepal is reeling under crisis since 25 April 2015 after it was hit by 7.9-magnitude tremor and several aftershocks. The earthquake death toll has crossed 5,000 according to the Armed Police Force data provided to the National Emergency Operation Center. The number of people who have been injured has crossed 10,000. Thousands of people are missing as people have been buried in the debris. Though Nepal Police, Nepal Army, Armed police Force, Volunteers and CSO activists have been mobilized in rescue operation and relief package collection and distribution; and the government of Nepal has centralized its efforts to rescue survivors, search the debris and collect and channelize relief materials in full-swing, due to lack of preparedness and coordination, there have been several problems. Thousands of people have been left homeless. Due to the scarcity of the tents/tarpaulins, thousands of displaced people have been taking shelter in open fields. They don’t have food items and water too. Many countries expressed deep sorrow over the loss and have also providing supports.
In this panic-stricken situation, NGO Federation of Nepal (NFN), an umbrella organization of NGOs in the country, has focused its efforts on possible support to the victims. NFN has been coordinating with Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), National Planning Commission and INGOs at central level. The government has District Disaster Management Coordination Committee in each district and NFN is the only body to represent in the committee from CSOs. So, NFN is also collecting funds/donations and necessary relief materials, which will be provided to the affected people through district level Disaster Management Coordination committee of Nepal government.
With an aim to dispatch urgent needs such as tents, drinking water, food and clothes, blankets NFN, with coordination with several CSO networks, federations and alliance, has established Disaster Relief Fund at the centre and has appealed national and international organizations and CSO community to contribute to it. After mapping of needs, NFN will handover relief materials to the local authority very soon. So, in this critical situation, we appeal our well wishers to contribute in the Disaster Relief Fund so that we could manage for small support to the quake-stricken people who have lost their relatives, have been displaced and going through painful situation.
