UP-093-2006: NEPAL: Democracy to return to Nepal
NEPAL: Absence of democracy; repression of demonstrations; violation of human rights
———————————–
Dear friends,
The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) writes to congratulate the hundreds of thousands of people who have gathered in the streets of Nepal over the past weeks for having successfully ended King Gyanendras coup, which was staged on 1 February 2006, and reinstated democracy in their country. We also congratulate and thank those of you among our network who have written letters of support in solidarity with the demonstrators.
At midnight on April 24, the King agreed in a televised address to reinstate Nepal’s parliament, sparking jubilant scenes as thousands poured onto the streets of the capital. The move to restore parliament, a key demand of opposition parties leading the protests, would be effective from Friday, the King said. King Gyanendra expressed his condolences over the deaths of people during the street protests in his address.
The AHRC believes this is a positive move forward in restoring full democracy to Nepal and in ensuring the protection and promotion of human rights in the country. We also believe that the first step along this path would be to release all persons detained arbitrarily in Nepal.
Given the change in circumstances since our appeal issued yesterday, we ask you to refrain from sending the suggested letter seeking the intervention of the United Nations Secretary General and High Commissioner for Human Rights. We will continue to monitor the situation in the country and will alert you if and when any further action is required.
Thank you.
