Dear friends,
The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) wishes to forward additional lists of the arrest against the political activists and human rights defenders since 1 February 2005. The information of lists is up to 21 February 2005. You can see previous lists of the arrested persons on our urgent appeal (UP-16-2005).
The situation in Nepal is very chaotic. In a February 7 order, the District Administration Office Nepalgunj in Nepal instructed members of the media to falsify news in favour of the government, which since February 1 has been under the absolute power of the king. The order follows a February 3 notice from the Ministry of Information and Communication to the effect that all and any media reports opposing the takeover by the king have been banned. (See further: AS-19-2005)
Under the circumstances, all independent media have been silenced and the arrest and detention of large numbers of democrats, human rights activists, journalists and students have thus not been reported. The list below revealed only some numbers of the arrested people. Our concern is that many of these people may end up tortured, disappeared, displaced or dead.
We again call for your strong support to the Nepalese people who are in desperate situation. You can find the sample letter and contact information of the Nepali authorities in our previous urgent appeal on this case (UP-16-2005). Please be sure that the number of the arrested political leaders/activists (237) and human rights defenders (29) is changed to 383 and 35 when you use the sample letter.
